Registered Nurse - PCU (Travel/Contract)
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Day shift, 3x12 hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
- Average patient ratio: 1:3
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Floating: Floating within scope to meet facility needs is required
- Block schedule accommodation: Not available
- On-call: Not required
- Guaranteed hours: Yes
- Pending license accepted if active prior to start date
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience
- ICU, Ventilator, Telemetry, and Tracheostomy experience required
- Experience with Pulmonary Step Down Unit patients on mechanical ventilation
- First-time travel nurses accepted
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification
Licensing
- Active RN license required prior to start

- CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
- Preventing Pressure Injury Training
- Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
- Pyxis ES MedStation Training
- Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
- Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
- Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (except certain campuses)
- AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health)
- New Employee Orientation Module
- 21st Century Cures Act Module (for RNs except Home Health)
- ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
- eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
- Chaperone Policy Training
- Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026)
Competency Exams & Testing
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score 85%)
- Color Blind Testing (must score 80%, required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required for Telemetry, MS/Tele, ER/ED, all ICU, Progressive Care/PCU, Stepdown, PACU, IR/Cath/EPEndo/GI, Labor and Delivery)
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical Exam within 12 months of start
- Fit Mask Test within 12 months, updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
- Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray documentation
- Annual TB Questionnaire
- Immunizations or positive titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (or declination within 1 year)
- Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric specialties, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum (declination accepted)
- 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
- COVID vaccination series preferred
Background & Employment History
- 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start (includes SSN trace, counties lived/worked, national sex offender, federal checks)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Verification of highest level of education required; foreign equivalency reports required for internationally educated candidates
- Employment application must include 7 years of work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
- Work history verification for last 7 years required (attestations not accepted)
- One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU/CTICU assignments (charge nurse references not accepted)
- Skills checklist required within 12 months of start
- Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech and specialty roles (not applicable here)
Additional Notes
- Candidate must have photo ID matching legal name on first day
- Must provide primary source license verification within 30 days of start
- Pending license must be active before start date
- Floating may be required within scope of practice
- First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Connecticut
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with at least 1 year of PCU experience within the last year
- Mechanical ventilation (ventilator) experience
- Tracheostomy experience
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Certification (NIHSS)
