Job Opportunity: ER Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Milford, Connecticut
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work in a combined Adult/Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) in a short-term acute care hospital with Level II Trauma designation.
  • Required to work every other weekend.
  • Floating to other units as needed.
  • Charting system: EPIC.
  • Free parking available.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience in a General Emergency Department setting.
  • Experience managing dysrhythmias.
  • IV therapy and phlebotomy skills including central line care/management and starting/maintaining IVs.
  • Medication experience with IV vasopressors.
  • Respiratory skills including CPAP/BiPAP and care of ventilated patients.
  • Professional skills in isolation precautions and triage.
  • Willingness to accept first-time travel nurses (prior travel experience not required).

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)

Licensure

  • Valid Registered Nurse license for Connecticut or Compact RN license.
  • Primary source license verification required within 30 days of start.

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 12 months of start, updated annually.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
  • Verification of highest education level; foreign equivalency evaluation required for internationally educated candidates.
  • Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps greater than 90 days.
  • Work history verification for the last 7 years for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024.
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure if applicable to certain units (not typically ED).

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) within 12 months, updated annually; must be clean-shaven for fit testing.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation as applicable.
  • Annual TB questionnaire.
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or 2 MMR vaccines)
    • Varicella (positive titer, 2 vaccines, or physician-documented history)
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer, vaccine series, or declination within 1 year)
  • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties, labor/delivery, postpartum (declination accepted).
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 – 3/31).
  • COVID vaccination series preferred but not required.

Competency & Training Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 12 months, minimum 85% passing score.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for ED RNs.
  • Color blind testing required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024, minimum 80% passing score.
  • Language Services Training.
  • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health).
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training.
  • Stroke Education (except pediatric specialties and NICU).
  • CLABSI Prevention Training for adult and pediatric patients.
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training.
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education.
  • Pyxis ES MedStation training modules.
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training.
  • Patient Bedside Rounding module (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, and ED).
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (except certain hospitals).
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health).
  • New Employee Orientation Module.
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RNs except Home Health).
  • ED Handbook (required for ED/ER RNs).
  • eCart Training Module (not required for pediatric, periop/OR, outpatient, case managers, home health).
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap of 6+ months between assignments or updated module).
  • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026 and forward).

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must provide photo ID matching legal name on first day.
  • Candidates must complete all required attestations and training modules, often via electronic signature.
  • Return travelers with less than 1 year gap may not need to repeat some attestations.
  • RTO (Return to Office) requests require 7 days’ approval.

This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work in a busy Emergency Department with a diverse patient population, including both adults and pediatrics, in a well-equipped acute care hospital setting.


Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current certifications:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • Experience managing dysrhythmias
  • Central line care and management experience
  • Experience with respiratory support including CPAP and BiPAP
