Job Opportunity: PACU Registered Nurse

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Schedule & Work Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 4x10 hour shifts (12:00 PM - 10:30 PM), Monday through Friday
  • No weekends or on-call required
  • Average daily census: 70-90 patients
  • Unit size: 38 patient bays
  • Unit operates 24/7
  • Floating: May float within scope only to PACU or PreOp units
  • Local candidates not accepted; home address must be at least 75 miles from facility
  • Guaranteed hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
  • No block scheduling accommodations

Patient Population & Unit Description

  • Adult patients primarily, with occasional adolescents and geriatric patients
  • Level I Trauma Center
  • Surgical recovery for neurosurgery, ENT, plastics, orthopedics, thoracic, vascular, trauma, general surgery, colorectal, gynecology, urology, electrophysiology, interventional radiology, and transplant (excluding open heart surgeries and liver transplants)
  • Care includes patients with artificial airways, invasive monitoring (including ICP), blood transfusions, vasoactive drugs, and ventilated patients
  • Unit has its own Patient Care Technician (PCT) and transport team

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of PACU (Post Anesthesia Care) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Critical care experience
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Fingerprinting required for assignments involving long-term care or rehab units in Illinois
  • Verification of highest nursing education required (diploma or transcript acceptable)
  • Primary source verification of professional license required (NURSYS for Missouri)
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit testing for N95 respirators required and must be current
  • Immunizations and health screenings:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination
    • Two negative TB tests or acceptable alternatives (T-Spot or Q-Gold)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption during flu season
  • Annual compliance documents including:
    • HIPAA Acknowledgement
    • Latex Allergy Questionnaire
    • Confidentiality Form
    • Hand Hygiene Policy
    • Fingernail Policy
    • Dress Code Policy
    • Regulatory Compliance Education (annual training and quiz with 80% passing score)
  • Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required and must be current
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for new and extension candidates

Additional Notes

  • No weekend or on-call requirements
  • No prior travel experience required
  • Must be able to complete required orientation modules (~16 hours) through online platform before start
  • Performance evaluations may be requested but are not mandatory for extensions or per diem status
  • Candidates must complete all required documentation and certifications prior to start to ensure clearance

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, Level I Trauma Center PACU with a diverse surgical patient population, requiring strong critical care nursing skills and certifications.
