Job Opportunity: Critical Care Float Nurse
Location: Newport News, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Float position covering Critical Care Units including Surgical ICU (SICU), Medical ICU (MICU), Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), and Oncology ICU (OICU).
- Night shift schedule: Friday, Saturday, Sunday (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM).
- Units care for a variety of critically ill patients including trauma, surgical complications, neuro, cardiac procedures, oncology, DKA, and alcohol withdrawal.
- Flexible scheduling preferred; every other weekend required including Saturday and Sunday. Holiday shifts may be assigned during the contract.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia.
- Minimum 2 years of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing experience, with ICU experience within the last year.
- Float nursing experience.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
Background and Compliance Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required.
- 7-year criminal background check within one year of start, updated annually, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years.
- Drug screen within the last 12 months.
- Physical exam within the last 12 months.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol; if positive, clearance letter required.
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B series or declination, seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval).
- COVID vaccine series preferred; declination form accepted if no vaccine records available.
- Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check fingerprint results may be required.
Documentation and Orientation
- Recent professional photo for badge (taken within last 6 months, head-on, work-appropriate attire, neutral background).
- Confidentiality agreement, dress code policy, scrub color policy, safety brochure, drug-free policy, and hand washing hygiene policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start.
- Core orientation testing and HIPAA acknowledgment required.
- References: 2 professional references required.
- Employment application/resume required.
- Skills checklist must be updated annually.

- Driver’s license required only for Home Health & Hospice positions (not applicable here).
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position.
