Description
Registered Nurse – MedSurg/Telemetry
Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (with possible extension)
Shift: Nights, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Floating: Required
Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live more than 75 miles away
Unit & Patient Population
- High volume MedSurg/Telemetry unit
- Complex care including medicine, orthopedic overflow, and complex long-term patients
- Patient ratios typically range from 1:5 to 1:7
- Must have experience managing a 1:6 patient ratio
- Charge nurse experience required
Required Skills & Experience
- Specialty: MedSurg/Telemetry nursing with telemetry monitoring on the unit
- Experience with rapid response/code teams
- Care and management of pacemakers (temporary and permanent)
- Feeding tube care and management
- Blood product administration
- Central line, peripheral line, and PICC line care/management
- Phlebotomy and IV starts
- Heparin protocols
- Orthopedic trauma and total joint replacements
- Surgical drains
- Respiratory support including High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, and portable oxygen tanks
- Tracheostomy management
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care including wound vac
Required Certifications & Licenses
- New York RN license in hand – no exceptions
- BLS (AHA provider/instructor/RQI acceptable)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification (valid and to be updated annually)
- ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM as required by unit (verify based on unit assignment)
- State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as required
- Color blindness testing (one-time)
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of specialty experience in MedSurg/Telemetry nursing
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers accepted if patient ratio experience is met
Patient Care & Documentation
- Charting experience with EPIC electronic health record system required
Health & Compliance Requirements
Candidates must complete the following health-related requirements and lab work within 5 days of contract signing:
- Physical exam (within 1 year, updated annually)
- Fit mask test (annual) – acceptable masks include Halyard duckbill 1870+, 1860 Regular, 1860 Small; PAPR accepted if fit test failed
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year) or TB questionnaire annually
- Immunizations or positive titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
- Varicella
- Drug screening within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
- Snellen eye exam within 1 year (not required annually)
- COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required
Background & Verification
- Government-issued photo ID required
- 7-year criminal background check (felony checks) within 3 months of start
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 3 months of start and monthly thereafter
- Education verification from primary source required (transcripts/diplomas if no verification on file)
- Foreign equivalency education evaluation if applicable
- Employment application and work history verification required
- References (2 within 3 years) required for certain candidates
- State-specific checks including sex offender registry and Medicaid exclusion list as required
Additional Notes
- Floating to other units is required
- Scrub color: navy bottoms, navy or white tops
- Facility uses Epic for charting
- Candidates must be prepared for a high-volume, fast-paced environment with complex patient care needs
This position offers an opportunity to work in a tertiary care hospital setting with a diverse patient population requiring advanced MedSurg and telemetry nursing skills.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New York
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of MedSurg/Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
- Experience managing a patient ratio of 1:6
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
