Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Emergency Room (ER)

Location

  • City: New Haven, Connecticut

Employment Type

  • Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Schedule

  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts of 12 hours each (7:00 AM to 7:00 PM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Guaranteed hours
  • Floating: Will cross-train and float within scope to other campuses including ED Observation and other Emergency Departments
  • On-call: Not required

Patient Care & Unit Details

  • Unit: Emergency Department (ED)
  • Ratios: Average 1:6 patients during day and night shifts
  • Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Travelers are assigned to one campus but may rotate to others and ED observation units
  • Travelers do not work trauma/rescue rooms, triage, or locked behavioral health units

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse in Emergency Department
  • Required Years of Experience: Minimum 1.5 years from a similar hospital; preferred 2 years
  • Prior travel experience: Not accepted for first-time travelers (first-timers not accepted)

Certifications Required

  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Licensure

  • Pending license accepted
  • Must have valid RN license appropriate for Connecticut or Compact license with application for CT license within 72 hours if not currently held

Orientation & Start Dates

  • Virtual orientation on Friday, onsite reporting on Monday
  • Next start date options: July 10 or July 17

Key Policies

  • Weekend call-out makeup policy applies with specific rescheduling and coaching procedures for missed weekend shifts

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • 7-year criminal background check (updated annually)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
    • Sex offender search
  • Education Verification:
    • Highest level of education verified; foreign equivalency reports required for internationally educated candidates
  • Employment History:
    • 7 years work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
    • Work history verification required for last 7 years
  • References:
    • One supervisor reference within the past year required for ICU/CTICU; standard references for other units
  • Skills Checklist: Required within 12 months of start
  • Physical Exam: Required within 12 months of start
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Fit Mask Test: Required within 12 months and updated annually; clean-shaven required for fit testing
  • Immunizations and Health Requirements:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
    • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for certain specialties (not required)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity or vaccination
    • Hepatitis B immunity or vaccination/declination
    • Varicella immunity or vaccination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season
    • COVID vaccination preferred but not required
  • Competency Exams:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (85% passing score)
    • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024)
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for certain units (not required for ED)
  • Facility-Specific Training Modules (to be completed and attested):
    • Language Services Training
    • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry)
    • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
    • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
    • Stroke Education (except Pediatric specialties and NICU)
    • CLABSI Prevention Training
    • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
    • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
    • Pyxis ES MedStation Training
    • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
    • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
    • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (except certain hospitals)
    • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health, Home Health)
    • New Employee Orientation Module
    • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
    • ED Handbook (required for ED RNs)
    • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
    • Chaperone Policy Training
    • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026 and forward)

Additional Notes

  • Parking cost: Approximately $125/month
  • Charting system: Epic
  • RTO (Return to Office) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
  • Travelers will not be assigned to trauma/rescue rooms or locked behavioral health units
  • Must comply with facility policies on weekend call-outs and makeup shifts

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 1 year of Emergency Department (ED) experience within the last year
  • Trauma experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
