Registered Nurse – PCU (Pulmonary/GI)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Schedule & Shift Details
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
- Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
- Floating: May be required to float within skillset
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit Type: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with primary Pulmonary/GI focus
- Patient Population: Adults and geriatrics
- Unit Census: Approximately 27 patients daily
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5
- No ventilators on unit; may work without CNA support
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license required
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
- Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Required Clinical Skills & Experience
- Experience in PCU, DOU, IMC, or stepdown settings
- Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
- Familiarity with common IV medications: Cardizem (no titration), Amiodarone, Heparin (protocol), Insulin (protocol)
- Respiratory support skills: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
- Use of rapid response/code teams and isolation precautions
Documentation & Compliance Requirements
- Epic charting experience required
- Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
- Background check: 7-year history required within 1 year of start, including all locations lived/worked
- E-Verify or attestation required
- Education verification of highest earned degree required (transcript/diploma may be accepted as placeholder)
- Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (specific mask types required)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Flu vaccination documentation or mask and declination form during flu season
- Professional photo for badge required
- Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance documents prior to start
- Two clinical references required
- Annual skills checklist and competency exams as applicable
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Current ACLS certification
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system

- First-time travelers are accepted
- Locals within the radius rule are accepted
- Must include all scheduling requests with submission
This position offers an opportunity to work in a Magnet-designated, Level I Trauma Center with advanced specialty care in a teaching hospital environment.
