Job Opportunity: ER Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Primarily scheduled as a Triage Nurse with opportunities to train in clinical areas based on department needs.
  • Average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6 (days, nights, weekends).
  • Weekend shifts required every other weekend.
  • Floating within scope to meet facility needs is expected.
  • Assigned to one campus with possible rotation to other campuses and ED observation units.
  • Travelers are not assigned to trauma/rescue rooms, triage, or locked behavioral health units.
  • Guaranteed hours provided.
  • Pending licenses accepted.
  • Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Connecticut.
  • Minimum 3 years of overall nursing experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department (ED) experience, including experience within the last year.
  • At least one completed travel assignment.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 2 years of Walk-in/Waiting Room Triage experience with demonstrated triage skills.
  • Certifications required:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
    • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Shift Details

  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM).
  • Weekend call-out policy includes mandatory makeup shifts within 6 weeks if a weekend shift is missed.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Valid photo ID matching legal name required on first day.
  • 7-year criminal background check within 12 months, including SSN trace, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended, and education verification.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
  • Foreign equivalency education evaluation and official transcripts required for internationally educated candidates.
  • Verification of highest education level required.
  • Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps over 90 days.
  • Work history verification for last 7 years required.
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months of start.
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech roles (not RN-specific).

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually; clean-shaven required for fit testing.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required.
  • Annual TB questionnaire.
  • Immunizations/vaccinations:
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 MMR vaccines; boosters required if titers low.
    • Hepatitis B: Positive titer, proof of 3-dose series, or declination within 1 year.
    • Varicella: Positive titer, 2 vaccines, or physician-documented history; boosters if low titer.
    • Tdap: Highly preferred for pediatric, labor/delivery, postpartum specialties (not required).
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sept 1 – Mar 31); declinations not allowed.
  • COVID vaccination series preferred but not required.

Required Training and Certifications

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 85% score) within 12 months.
  • Color blind testing (minimum 80% score) required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for RNs in Telemetry, MS/Tele, ER/ED, ICU, Progressive Care, Stepdown, PACU, IR/Cath/EPEndo/GI, Labor and Delivery units (not required for NICU, Psych/Behavioral Health, Pediatric, or Ambulatory units).
  • Language Services Training required for RNs (except certain campuses).
  • CAUTI Education Training required for RNs (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health).
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training required for RNs.
  • Stroke Education required for RNs (except Pediatric specialties and NICU).
  • CLABSI Prevention Training required for RNs (except certain campuses).
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training required for RNs (except certain campuses).
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education required for RNs (except certain campuses).
  • Pyxis ES MedStation training required for RNs (except certain campuses).
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training required for RNs.
  • Patient Bedside Rounding Module required for RNs and CNAs (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED).
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness required for RNs (except certain campuses).
  • AME Blood Administration Module required annually for RNs (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health).
  • New Employee Orientation Module required by start date.
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module required for RNs (except Home Health) and other specified tech roles (not required for certain campuses).
  • ED Handbook required for ED/ER RNs.
  • eCart Training Module required for all RNs (except Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health).
  • Chaperone Policy Training required for RNs and Allied staff with specific conditions for re-training.
  • Fire Safety Module required for RNs and Allied staff starting 5/4/2026.

  • EPIC testing is highly encouraged for ER RNs with prior EPIC experience; onsite training provided if testing is not completed or passed.
  • Medical exemptions for vaccinations require facility approval; religious exemptions approved by agency.
