NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Huntington, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Description
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Registered Nurse position
- Every other weekend required
- Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 3 patients
- Floating required to a stepdown NICU unit
- Care for neonates including those on CPAP, HFNC, RAM, and intermediate patients
- Telemetry monitoring on the unit
- Responsibilities include blood glucose monitoring, hyperbilirubinemia management, phototherapy, breastfeeding support, and handling of breast milk
- Patient care includes neonates 29-34 weeks and >34 weeks gestation
- Feeding management (bottle, breast, gavage) and placement/management of oral/nasogastric/nasojejunal tubes
- Isolation precautions and PPE use
- Management of neonatal sepsis and sepsis workup
- IV therapy including starting and maintaining IVs, administration of blood and blood products, central/implanted line care
- Medication administration including antibiotics, antivirals, anti-seizure medications, and neonatal dosage calculations
- Care for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome
- Additional skills: developmental care, patient/family teaching, phlebotomy, thermoregulation, respiratory distress syndrome management
- Documentation using Cerner electronic health record system

Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in West Virginia
- Minimum 3 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience, including experience within the last year
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (QGold or T-Spot within 6 months, updated annually)
- Required immunizations or titers with documentation:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis A, B, and C (including declination forms if applicable)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Seasonal flu vaccine required (with approved medical or religious exemptions)
- COVID-19 seasonal vaccine required; declination form required if opting out
- Drug screening within 30 days of start, including confirmation values for a comprehensive panel
- Onsite N95 fit testing (clean-shaven required for males)
Additional Requirements
- Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Completion of facility-specific orientation, annual education, and attestation forms prior to start
- Completion of confidentiality agreement and respiratory protection policy acknowledgment
- Must create facility-specific account for timekeeping prior to start
- Compliance with facility-specific exemption forms for flu and vaccine religious or medical exemptions
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable
Summary
This is a specialized NICU RN travel contract position requiring a minimum of 3 years NICU experience and prior travel experience. The role involves caring for neonates with complex needs in a high-acuity environment with a 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio. Candidates must hold current RN licensure, required certifications, and meet extensive health and compliance requirements. Night shift availability and weekend work every other weekend are mandatory. Floating to a stepdown NICU unit is also required.
