Registered Nurse - ICU/PCU/Medical-Surgical Float (Night Shift)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)

Job Overview
- Float position covering ICU, Progressive Care Unit (PCU), and Medical-Surgical (MS) units.
- Must be comfortable working across all three specialties.
- Experience working with patient ratios of at least 1:5 required.
- Staffing needs may require floating 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours).
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
- First-time travelers and local candidates are accepted.
Required Qualifications
Licensure
- Valid RN license in Virginia.
Education
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year.
- Experience with PICC line management and central line care.
- Experience with arterial line management.
- Experience with blood product administration.
- Skilled in trach management.
- Skilled in non-invasive airway support including nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, ventilator management, and chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac).
- Proficient in continuous IV sedation.
- Proficient in titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips.
- Comfortable working with patient ratios of at least 1:5.
- Experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU).
- Experience in Medical-Surgical (Med Surg) units.
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
Certifications
- ACLS (American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support).
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association.
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale).
Unit Details
- ICU average patient ratio: 2:1
- PCU average patient ratio: 5:1
- Medical-Surgical average patient ratio: 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)
Scheduling & Policies
- Shift pattern: 3 twelve-hour night shifts per week.
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2-week period.
- All requests for time off, block scheduling, or special scheduling must be submitted with application.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals.
- Education verification of highest earned degree required.
- NURSYS verification for RN license within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually.
- Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form for flu season.
- Professional photo for badge.
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.
- Review of orientation manual (not required for inpatient RNs).
References & History
- Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted).
- Complete employment application/resume.
- Annual update of skills checklist required.
Additional Notes
- EPIC charting experience required.
- Magnet-designated hospital with Level I Trauma Center status.
- Hospital affiliated with a medical school and certified as an Advanced Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center.
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with floating across critical care and medical-surgical units, seeking a night shift travel contract in Virginia.
