Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Unit

Location: Uniontown, Pennsylvania
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit & Patient Population

• Unit: 2E MedSurg (includes areas 2N & 2S, treated as one large unit)
• Beds: 29 private beds
• Patient types:

  • MedSurg patients including pneumonia, dialysis, palliative care, hospice, end-of-life care
  • Some inpatient chemotherapy (low volume; chemo administered by director & manager)
  • COVID-positive patients housed on one hallway ("dirty" area); "clean" patients on separate hallway—nurses may be assigned to both simultaneously and must be comfortable with this
• Common diagnoses on 1W MedSurg (separate unit): post-surgical and orthopedic patients

Schedule & Shifts

• Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday) plus 2 Fridays per schedule (often grouped Fri-Sat-Sun)
• Hours per week: 36
• Self-scheduling and blocked schedules allowed if unit needs are met

Staffing & Ratios

• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7
• Charge Nurse/House Supervisor: Clinical Manager Mon-Sat acts as charge nurse and nurse manager; takes patients only if census >24
• Nights have a resource nurse with a full patient assignment
• Nurse aides (CNAs): 2 CNAs on day shifts; no CNAs on nights
• Floating: Only to other MedSurg units

Orientation & Training

• Floor-specific orientation: 1 shift with a preceptor

Patient Care & Equipment

• Telemetry: Patients may be on remote telemetry monitored by a monitor tech on a different floor; no telemetry monitors on the unit itself
• Drips: Heparin and possibly morphine sulfate (MSO4) for comfort measures; no cardiac drips
• Ventilation: Bipap, Cpap, High Flow oxygen managed by Respiratory Therapy (RT)
• Nurses do not read telemetry strips

Dress Code

• Scrubs: Navy blue; jackets (if worn) must also be navy blue

Required Certifications & Compliance

• BLS certification required
• Must submit a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with application
• Any professional license issues must be disclosed at time of submission
• Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for candidate submissions

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license for Pennsylvania
• Experience: Minimum 2 years MedSurg experience (based on specialty requirement)
• Comfortable caring for both COVID-positive and non-COVID patients on the same unit

Additional Notes

• Nurses work into the permanent staff holiday rotation
• Unit includes both day and night shifts, but this position is specifically for nights
