Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)
Location: New London, Connecticut
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience required
- Must be able to float as needed
- Work every other weekend
- Facility type: Short-term acute care, Level III trauma center

Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Certifications (may be required depending on unit)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - AHA or ARC
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - AHA or ARC (if applicable)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) - Required for ER, preferred for Pediatric ER
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - Required for NICU only
- Chemotherapy certification - Required if working in Oncology units
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training - Required for Behavioral Health, preferred for ER
- NIH Stroke Certification - Required for most RNs except Behavioral Health, Case Management, Home Health, OR, Pediatric units, NICU, Labor and Delivery
- Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment
Competency Exams and Training
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score ≥85%)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for RNs in Telemetry, Med Surg/Tele, ER/ED, ICU, Progressive Care, Stepdown, PACU, IR/Cath Lab, Endoscopy, GI, Labor and Delivery
- Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024, must score ≥80%)
- Various facility-specific training modules and attestations (e.g., Dysphagia Screening, Stroke Orientation, Patient Care Services Stroke, Pyxis ES MedStation, Baxter Pump Interoperability, Patient Bedside Rounding, Ventricular Assist Device Awareness, Blood Administration, Fire Safety, Chaperone Policy, eCart Training) may be required depending on unit and facility policies
Background and Documentation Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 12 months of start, including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended, and other checks as applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Verification of highest level of education required; foreign equivalency evaluation and diploma required for internationally educated candidates
- Employment application with 7-year work history, no gaps greater than 90 days
- Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
- Skills checklist within 12 months of start
- Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech roles (not RN-specific)
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually; clean-shaven required for fit testing
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation (various acceptable tests)
- Annual TB questionnaire
- Immunizations or proof of immunity for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (or declination within 1 year)
- Varicella (or boosters if low titer)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric specialties, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum (declination accepted)
- 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31); declinations not allowed
- COVID vaccination series preferred but not required

- Candidate must have photo ID matching legal name on first day
- Various facility-specific training modules and attestations must be reviewed and signed prior to or at start
- Some certifications and trainings depend on unit assignment; always verify unit-specific requirements
- Floating to other units may be required
This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level III trauma center with a well-established acute care environment, utilizing Epic for charting and providing care primarily on night shifts.
