Critical Care Float Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Newport News, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Description
- Float pool position covering Critical Care Units including Surgical ICU (SICU), Medical ICU (MICU), Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), and Oncology ICU (OICU).
- Units include three 18-bed ICUs and one 6-bed Oncology ICU.
- Patient populations: traumatic injuries, surgical complications, neurological patients, open-heart surgery, critically ill medical comorbidities, cardiac procedure monitoring, oncology patients requiring chemo inductions, DKA, and alcohol withdrawal.
- Flexible scheduling preferred; working every other weekend (including Saturday and Sunday) required. Holiday shifts may be scheduled during assignment.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Critical Care Float nurse, with at least 1 year of recent Critical Care Float experience.
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Current ACLS certification.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Demonstrated float experience across multiple critical care units.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- 7-year criminal background check within one year of start, updated annually.
- Drug screen within the last 12 months.
- Physical exam within the last 12 months.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol; if positive, clearance letter required.
- Immunizations or proof of immunity for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (series, titer, or declination)
- Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31) with strict deadlines; medical or religious exemptions accepted with approval.
- COVID vaccine series preferred; declination form accepted if no vaccine records.
- Photo for facility badge (recent, professional, per specified guidelines).
- Signed facility-specific agreements and policies including confidentiality, dress code, scrub colors, safety brochure, drug-free policy, and hand washing hygiene.
- Two professional references required.
- Employment application/resume required.
- Annual skills checklist update required.
Additional Notes
- Driver’s license required only for Home Health & Hospice positions (not applicable here).
- Fingerprinting requirements updated as of July 2025; check if applicable for behavioral health placements.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position.
