Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Floor 6)
Location: Boise, Idaho
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Unit: Medical Surgical, Floor 6
- Beds: 35
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 (based on patient acuity using an acuity tool)
- Patient Population:
- Bariatric Surgery (Center of Excellence)
- Urology (TURP, cystoscopy, prostatectomy, continuous bladder irrigations)
- Colorectal Surgery
- Vascular Surgery (AAA repair, endarterectomy, fempop bypass)
- Acute Care Surgery
- Gynecological Surgery (mainly hysterectomies)
- Plastic Surgery/Breast Reconstruction (mastectomies)
- Cystic Fibrosis and general medical patients
- Additional specialty surgeries: Whipple, Pectus Surgery
Required Qualifications
- Active RN license
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience (preference for more)
- BLS Certification required
- Proficiency with:
- Central lines
- NG tube management
- Ostomy care
- Drain management
- Foley catheter management and continuous bladder irrigations (preferred)
- Strong professional communication skills
Clinical & Operational Information
- RNs do not titrate drips; common drips include heparin (set rate)
- Charge nurse present on each shift without patient assignment; travelers may serve as charge nurse if experienced
- CNA ratio approximately 1:8-10
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes CPAP, high flow, and occasional BiPAP (patients dependent on BiPAP are transferred to higher level of care)
- Remote telemetry monitoring available; RNs must be able to interpret cardiac strips
- Floating required to like units at nearby hospitals; travelers are first to float, though floating is not frequent
- Orientation: 1 shift of unit-specific orientation plus 1 didactic day with educator following hospital orientation
Scheduling & Work Hours
- Shift length: 12 hours (7 AM – 7 PM)
- Hours per week: 36
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend, possibly more if needed
- Holiday coverage: As needed
- No call or standby requirements
- Scheduler aims to schedule night shifts in blocks of three for work/life balance
Additional Information
- Dress code: No specific scrub color required; scrubs must be clean and professional
- Facility enforces a 50-mile radius rule for candidates’ permanent address verification before proceeding with profile review
This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg RNs comfortable with a diverse surgical patient population and flexible scheduling including floating to similar units.
