Description

Registered Nurse – Women's Services (L&D, Postpartum, LDRP)

Location: Nampa, Idaho
Assignment Length: 13 weeks (travel assignment)
Shift: Nights (7pm–7am)
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week


Unit Overview

  • Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP) unit with 14 LDRP beds (patients stay in the same room)
  • 2 OR suites for C-sections where RNs circulate and recover patients
  • 4 triage beds staffed by travelers
  • Approximately 90 births per month (1200 per year)
  • Follow AWHONN staffing standards:
    • Labor: 1:1 ratio unless 2 cervical ripening patients paired
    • Postpartum: 1:3 couplets care
    • Triage: 1:3 ratio, with resource nurse support if 4 patients

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Idaho
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 3 years of recent experience in Labor, Delivery, Recovery & Postpartum (LDRP), including experience within the last year
  • Experience working with Maternal-Fetal patients and Neonate patients
  • Experience attending deliveries and completing newborn care
  • Experience with triage in L&D settings
  • Experience circulating C-sections and OR circulate experience
  • Experience providing postpartum couplet care
  • Experience managing magnesium protocols and titrating magnesium and Pitocin drips
  • Certifications required:
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
    • STABLE certification

Additional Skills and Responsibilities

  • Attend deliveries and stabilize newborns ("baby catcher") including physical assessment and care within first 2 hours
  • Participate in triage and resource nurse roles as needed
  • Float to other regional sites within 50-mile radius in primary skill set (L&D, Postpartum, Antepartum) or as a sitter
  • Work with a diverse patient population including:
    • 32 weeks gestation and greater
    • Hypertension patients on magnesium therapy
    • Blood alcohol content (BAC) cases
    • Trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) patients
    • Gestational diabetes
    • Antepartum patients (no placenta previa or accreta cases)
  • Follow hospital policies including no acrylic or gel nails due to embedded NICU proximity

Orientation and Scheduling

  • Unit-specific orientation: 4 shifts covering C-section, labor, and postpartum care
  • Compliance and electronic health record (EPIC Curio) assignments must be completed before start
  • Scheduling:
    • 7am–7pm and 7pm–7am shifts for resource and charge nurses
    • Travelers fill schedule gaps; preference considered but no guaranteed block scheduling or working 6 shifts in a row
  • Weekend and holiday shifts: no minimum weekend requirement; holiday shifts may be assigned based on unit needs
  • No call or standby requirements

Team and Support

  • OB hospitalist available 24/7
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner available 24/7
  • Anesthesia available 24/7
  • Respiratory therapy available for troubleshooting (vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow)
  • No telemetry/monitor techs on unit; RNs rarely need to read their own strips
  • Continuous electronic fetal monitoring system: Centricity
  • Support staff includes 1 surgical tech and 1 CNA per shift (CNA coverage may vary)
  • Charge nurses do not take patient assignments; resource and triage nurses assist with breaks and deliveries

Additional Notes

  • Hospital-issued scrubs required, must be changed in and out at shift start/end
  • Travel duos must have 2 cars due to floating between sites
  • Radius rule: candidates must live outside a 50-mile radius from the facility to qualify for this travel assignment
