Behavioral Health Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract

Location: Syracuse, New York
Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 26 weeks


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care to patients/residents including medication administration, injections, tube feedings, IV insertion, blood sample collection (if certified), colostomy care, and other physician-ordered medical procedures.
  • Monitor and report changes in patient condition; take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure).
  • Perform basic patient care such as bathing, feeding, making beds, changing linens, lifting/moving patients, and caring for personal effects.
  • Provide clinical supervision and instruction to Graduate Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff.
  • Delegate nursing activities and procedures appropriately and conduct clinical rounds to assess nursing care needs.
  • Act as liaison to outside agencies and providers to ensure continuity of care and follow-up.
  • May perform supervisory duties including preparing reports and performance evaluations for lower-level nursing staff.
  • Initial 4-week training period on day shift (Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM) before transitioning to night shift; shift assignments may change based on facility needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Experience in supervisory roles within nursing or behavioral health settings.

Additional Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Medicaid enrollment proof required, including NPI number and certified mail receipt of Medicaid enrollment form.
  • Completion of time-sensitive forms such as:
    • Social Services 424 Form
    • Child Abuse Acknowledgement
    • New York Statewide Central Register LDSS - 3370 Form
  • Fingerprinting and background checks include Social Security trace, county searches for last 7 years, nationwide sex offender search, and other state-required checks.
  • TB Questionnaire must be completed annually in lieu of annual TB test (for agency compliance).

Work Environment and Notes

  • Nursing services may be provided within a state-operated facility or community-based residential/program setting.
  • Shift flexibility is required; shifts may change after training to meet facility needs.
  • This is a travel/contract position requiring adaptability to changing schedules and environments.
