Registered Nurse - PCU Float (Travel/Contract)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
Job Overview
- Must be comfortable working across all Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units.
- Floating between units may occur 2-3 times per shift, with staffing needs re-evaluated every 4 hours.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
- First-time travelers and local candidates are accepted.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with phlebotomy and blood product administration
- Skilled in central line care and tracheostomy management
- Proficient in non-invasive airway support including nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, and chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac)
- Experience in dysrhythmia interpretation and management, including titrating cardiac drips
- Ability to manage PCA and heparin protocols
- Experience administering IV insulin
- Proficient in Epic electronic health record system
Staffing Ratios
- PCU average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
- MS average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6 (may flex up to 1:7)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility required within 48 hours of signing.
- Background check covering the last 7 years required within 1 year of start date.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- Education verification of highest earned degree required; transcript or diploma may be requested.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required for all candidates.
- Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually; onsite fit testing available if needed.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Immunization or positive titer documentation required for: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Seasonal flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form required during flu season.
- Professional photo for badge required.
- Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance checklists prior to start.
- References: 2 clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted).
- Employment application/resume required.
- Annual skills checklist update required.
Scheduling & Policies
- Staffing needs and floating assignments may change every 4 hours during shifts.
- Call-off policy allows 1 shift off per 2-week period.
- All requests for return to office (RTO), block scheduling, or special scheduling must be submitted with application.
