Registered Nurse - ICU/PCU/Medical-Surgical Float (Travel/Contract)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Overview
- Float position covering ICU, Progressive Care Unit (PCU), and Medical-Surgical (MS) units.
- Must be comfortable working all three specialties and managing patient ratios of at least 1:5.
- Staffing needs may require floating 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours).
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
- First-time travelers and local candidates are accepted.
Required Qualifications
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
Education
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
Experience
- Minimum 2 years ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
- Experience in an Acute Care setting
- PICC line management experience
- Central line care and management experience
- Arterial line management experience
- Blood product administration experience
- Tracheostomy management experience
- Non-invasive airway support experience including nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, and ventilator management
- Chest tube management experience (Emerson/PleurEvac equipment)
- Continuous IV sedation experience
- Experience titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility required within 48 hours of signing.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years, completed within 1 year of start.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals.
- Education verification of highest earned degree required.
- NURSYS verification for RN license within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) or clear chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually.
- Fit test for respirator masks within 1 year, updated annually (onsite fit testing available if needed).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Seasonal flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form.
- Professional photo for badge (plain background, no selfies or filters).
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.
- Completion of new hire paperwork and orientation materials as required.
Additional Requirements
- Must provide 2 clinical references (hospital evaluations accepted).
- Complete application/resume required.
- Annual update of skills checklist and competency exams as applicable.
- Must be comfortable with floating and flexible scheduling.
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
Unit Details
- ICU average patient ratio: 2:1
- PCU average patient ratio: 5:1
- Medical-Surgical average patient ratio: 6:1 (may flex to 7:1)
