Description
Registered Nurse – Neuro MedSurg (6 West)
Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Unit Overview
- Unit: 6 West – Neuro
- Beds: 20 total (14 floor beds)
- Patient Ratios: 1:5-6 for floor patients
- Nurse Aide Support: Yes, 3 per shift with ratios of 1:7-10
- Telemetry: Yes, monitor techs read strips; RNs verify monitor tech readings in Epic but do not read strips themselves
- Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7; floor ventilators managed by RT and physicians; RN vent experience not required
- Floating: Possible to other units (7E, 7W, 7NE, 10E) as first priority, then hospital-wide if needed
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Neurosciences patients including Deep Brain Stimulators (DBS)
- Stroke and Seizure patients
- Surgical/Post-Op Spine patients
- Various neurological disorders
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA) required
- NIHSS certification required and must be in hand at time of submission
- ACLS preferred
- Recent Epic experience required
- Strong overall neuro nursing experience with proficiency in G-tube care
Clinical Practice Notes
- Drip titration is generally by physician orders only; some protocols may allow RN titration with education
- Common drips include: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Nipride, Ketamine, Lasix, Bumex, Insulin
- RNs do not need to read telemetry strips but must document verification of monitor tech readings in Epic
Orientation & Scheduling
- Unit-specific orientation: 1 shift on the unit (weekend night shift, 7pm–7:30am)
- Weekend requirements:
- Weekend day shifts: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Weekend night shifts: Friday–Sunday or Saturday–Monday
- Weekday nights: every other weekend or 3 weekend shifts per schedule
- Holiday work is required as part of the rotation
- Travelers may work up to 3 consecutive shifts but flexibility is needed; no guarantee of consecutive shifts
Dress Code
- Scrub colors: Any combination of white and royal blue
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in West Virginia
- Minimum neuro nursing experience as indicated by strong proficiency and recent Epic use
- NIHSS certification in hand at time of application
- BLS required; ACLS preferred
Additional Notes
- Any background hits must be disclosed at time of submission
- Charge nurse available 24/7 on the unit
- No explicit call or standby requirement noted
