Description

Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)

Location: McCall, Idaho
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7 PM - 7 AM)
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Unit: Medical Surgical, 2nd Floor
Bed Count: 13 beds
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio:

  • 1:4 without CNA
  • 1:3 with CNA support

Job Description

  • Provide nursing care on a medical-surgical unit with common patient diagnoses including post-orthopedic surgeries, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, general surgical cases (cholecystectomy, appendectomy, mastectomies), atrial fibrillation with RVR, myocardial infarction, and chest pain rule outs.
  • Pediatric patients with RSV pneumonia may be present but are preferably assigned to core staff with pediatric experience.
  • RNs are required to titrate drips such as insulin, Cardizem, and heparin.
  • Telemetry monitoring is used; RNs should be able to read basic telemetry.
  • Occasional floating to the Emergency Room may be required but primarily work remains on the unit.
  • Charge Nurse role available as a resource and house supervisor covering Medical Surgical and Labor & Delivery units.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license appropriate for Idaho.
  • Minimum 1 year of medical-surgical nursing experience.
  • ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications required.
  • Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are welcome.

Additional Information

  • Unit has 1 CNA who assists with vital signs, activities of daily living, Foley catheter removal, and sterile procedure setup (no lab draws or IV starts/removals).
  • Respiratory therapy equipment includes nasal cannula, some high flow oxygen, CPAP, and BiPAP.
  • Telemetry/monitor tech support is virtual; RNs must interpret basic telemetry.
  • Scheduling is self-scheduled with 3 shifts per week, weekend coverage every 2nd to 3rd weekend, occasional holidays, and 2 call shifts per contract.
  • Dress code: professional scrubs of any color; scrubs are not provided.
  • Orientation: 1-2 shifts of unit-specific orientation.
  • Facility enforces a 50-mile radius rule for candidates’ permanent address.

  • Small hospital in a rural, outdoorsy location in western Idaho.
  • Team-oriented with a focus on patient-centered care.
  • Charge nurse and supervisory roles available for experienced nurses.

Cons

Onboarding is somewhat tedious, but they do dot every "i" and cross every T.
