Description

Registered Nurse – Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Schedule & Shift

  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Primarily weekdays with occasional weekends and rotating holidays
  • Must be willing to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to patients in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Maintain a nurse-to-patient ratio of approximately 1:5
  • Perform IV starts and telemetry monitoring
  • Document patient care using the Epic electronic health record system

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience using the Epic electronic health record system

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
  • Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Required immunizations and health documentation:
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination accepted)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31)
  • Annual fit mask test required for inpatient/patient-facing roles starting 7/13/2026 and beyond

Competency & Certification Exams

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (required prior to start)
  • Unit-specific competency exam
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 1 year of start (minimum passing score 76%)
  • NIH Stroke Certification may be required depending on unit (must be obtained within 1 year of start and renewed every 2 years)
  • Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement
  • Continuing education units (CEUs) related to stroke education required annually for nurses working in stroke-capable areas

Additional Requirements

  • 2 professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leader (charge nurse acceptable as second reference)
  • Employment application including education history required
  • Skills checklist required

Notes

  • Must be willing to comply with dress code and hand hygiene policies
  • Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
  • Parking permits and shuttle services available but subject to change (details not included here)
