IMU - Intermediate Care Unit RN
Overview
- Role: RN (Registered Nurse)
- Specialty/Unit: IMU - Intermediate Care Unit
- Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
- Contract length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Day/Night Rotate
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
Required Qualifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS
- Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
- Must be able to titrate drips, including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetolol, Nitro, and Heparin; occasionally Lasix
- Must be flexible to float as needed to Tele or MedSurg
- Must be able to manage intermediate-care patients including chest pain, r/o MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post pacer, pre/post caths, radial bands, groin checks, and Tikosyn therapy
Unit Details
- Intermediate Care Unit with 30 beds
- Typical nurse ratios are 1:4; usually 1:5, occasionally 1:6
- Charge nurses take a full patient assignment on both day and night shift
- RN scrub color: navy blue top and bottom, navy scrub jackets, no hoodies
Schedule Expectations
- Shifts run 7a–7p and staff must be ready by 6:45 am/pm
- Weekend coverage is required
- Travelers must be flexible for holidays
- Self-scheduling is allowed if unit needs are met
- Staff are allowed 4 requested days off per month
Orientation
- First day includes approximately 4 hours with HR and 8 hours on the unit with a preceptor
- Second day is also on the unit with a preceptor
- After that, the nurse works independently
Clinical Support
- Tele techs are available
- RT manages respiratory equipment
- IV team is in-house 24/7 and performs IV starts
- Hospitalist is in-house 24/7
- Intensivist is in the ICU 24/7
- Pharmacy is in-house 24/7
Additional Notes
- All staff are required to float as needed into the rotation
- Common overflow patients requiring intermediate care acuity may be assigned
