Description

Job Summary: Surgical Technician/Operating Room Tech (OR), Temple, TX The Surgical Technologist 1 functions in the inter-operative phase of patient care to expedite surgical procedures under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role assists the surgical team by ensuring the operating room environment is safe and that required equipment and instrumentation are available and functioning properly. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.

Job Details:

  • Schedule: 3x12s, 06301900, WedFri; minimum 36.0 hours per week
  • Required Qualifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) (American Heart Association (AHA) Only); Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) (NBSTSA or NCCT); Minimum 0.0 years of experience; knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards; knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique; knowledge of human anatomy; good verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal skills to interact with surgical and central sterile processing team members
  • Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited operating room surgical technologist program until the 180th day after graduation; or completion of a formal surgical technology training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service (or one-year operating room technician program preferred)
  • Responsibilities: Discusses special needs with the surgeon before surgery and scrubs in with adequate time for preparation; prepares the operative site by aseptically cleaning and patient clipping as needed; prepares and maintains organized instrument tables to avoid damage, incorrect needs, or instrument count discrepancies; identifies damaged or incomplete trays and rectifies discrepancies immediately or contacts appropriate support to avoid delays or injury; sets up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules, arranging sterile supplies and equipment required for specific procedures and selecting only needed items; ensures proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during procedures; performs surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and misc. items according to established policies and procedures; anticipates needs of the surgeon and surgical team staff; passes sterile supplies and equipment during procedures and assists as needed, including holding retractor devices; assists with draping and positioning the patient; receives surgical specimens following specimen protocol and passes specimens off the sterile field to the circulating nurse, verifying source of specimen; assists with placement of surgical dressings after case completion; disassembles surgical instrumentation, recycles as indicated, and appropriately disposes of sharps, fluids, and waste at the end of the surgical procedure; prepares soiled instrumentation for transport to decontamination; ensures cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies for distribution; cleans the operating room after each case and returns equipment to appropriate storage areas; follows infection control policies and relevant perioperative, safety, and regulatory requirements to ensure a safe environment for self, coworkers, and patients; ensures proper orientation and knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation prior to patient use
