Job Summary
Surgical Technologist 1, Operating Room (OR) Temple, Texas. The Surgical Technologist functions in the inter-operative phase of patient care to expedite surgical procedures, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role supports the surgical team by preparing and maintaining an organized, safe operating room environment, ensuring required equipment and supplies are available and functioning properly. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.
Job Details
- Schedule: Evenings; 3x12s (12 hours per shift), 1100-2330, Mon-Wed (minimum 36 hours per week).
- Required Qualifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) (AHA Only); Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) (NBSTSA or NCCT); successful completion of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited surgical technologist program (or other nationally accredited surgical technologist program) until the 180th day after graduation; successful completion of formal surgical technology training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service (or one-year operating room technician program preferred); minimum 2 years of operating room experience with broad experience across trauma, orthopedics, general surgery, plastics, ENT, urology, and robotics.
- Preferred Qualifications: One-year operating room technician program; formal training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service.
- Responsibilities:
- Coordinates special surgical needs with the surgeon prior to surgery and scrubs in with sufficient time to prepare instruments before the surgeon scrubs in.
- Prepares the operative site by aseptically cleaning and patient clipping, as needed.
- Prepares and maintains instrument table(s) in an organized manner to avoid instrumentation damage, incorrect needs, and incorrect instrument counts.
- Identifies damaged or incomplete trays, rectifies discrepancies immediately, or contacts appropriate support to avoid delays or injury.
- Sets up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules, including arranging sterile set up of instrument table supplies and equipment required for specific procedures by selecting and opening only needed supplies.
- Ensures proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during procedures.
- Performs surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items according to established policies and procedures.
- Anticipates needs of the surgeon and surgical team staff; passes sterile supplies and equipment during procedures, holds retractors, and supports team needs throughout the case.
- Assists with draping and positioning the patient.
- Receives surgical specimens following specimen protocol and passes specimens off the sterile field to the circulating nurse, verifying source of specimen.
- Assists with placement of surgical dressings following case completion.
- Disassembles surgical instrumentation at end of procedure, recycles as indicated, and disposes of sharps, fluids, and waste appropriately.
- Prepares soiled instrumentation for proper transportation to decontamination; supports cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of instruments, equipment, and supplies for distribution.
- Cleans the operating room following each case and returns equipment to appropriate storage areas.
