Description

The ECMO RN is a specialized critical care nurse responsible for managing patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. This role involves monitoring ECMO circuits, providing advanced hemodynamic and respiratory support, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The ECMO RN works primarily in intensive care settings, such as Cardiovascular ICUs, Neonatal ICUs, or Trauma ICUs.

Key Responsibilities:

1. ECMO Management & Patient Care
  • Operate and manage ECMO circuits, ensuring proper function and troubleshooting issues.
  • Assess and monitor patients' hemodynamic and respiratory status while on ECMO support.
  • Administer medications, fluids, and blood products as per protocol.
  • Collaborate with physicians, perfusionists, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers to optimize ECMO therapy.
  • Perform and document frequent patient assessments, including neurological and cardiovascular evaluations.
2. Emergency & Crisis Intervention
  • Recognize and respond to ECMO-related complications such as clotting, bleeding, circuit failure, or patient instability.
  • Initiate emergency procedures, including circuit changes, CPR, or rapid interventions as necessary.
  • Maintain proficiency in managing cardiac arrests, severe respiratory failure, and shock states.
3. Equipment & Protocol Adherence
  • Ensure ECMO equipment is functioning correctly and follow maintenance protocols.
  • Adhere to evidence-based guidelines and institutional policies for ECMO management.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of ECMO settings, patient responses, and interventions.
4. Patient & Family Education
  • Educate patients and families about ECMO therapy, expected outcomes, and potential complications.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families facing critical illness.
5. Continuous Learning & Quality Improvement
  • Participate in ECMO training, simulation exercises, and continuing education programs.
  • Assist in developing and improving ECMO protocols and best practices.
  • Contribute to research, quality improvement initiatives, and data collection for ECMO program evaluation.
