ER RN Opportunity - Phoenix, Arizona

Facility Overview

  • Location: Phoenix, AZ
  • Facility Type: Teaching hospital, nationally recognized tertiary care center
  • Beds: 607 total
  • Specialty Services: Lung, liver, kidney transplants; associated with Barrow Neuro Institute (#1 neuro institute)
  • Unit: Emergency Department (ED) / Trauma
  • ED Beds: Acute - 36, Subacute - 54, Trauma bays - 6 (no travelers assigned here)
  • Patient Volume: ~88,000 patients/year (~250-300 per day)
  • Common Diagnoses: Trauma, burns; pediatric patients transferred out
  • Psych Holds: 30-40 at a time

Job Details

  • Specialty: ER RN
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum (facility will not consider contracts shorter than 13 weeks)
  • Shifts: 7a-7p, 7p-7a, 11a-11p, 1p-1a
  • Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month (unit discretion)
  • Float Policy: Float within the ER; may float between 4 facilities within ~30 minutes of each other (main campus, Westgate, 2 freestanding ERs)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Charge Nurses: 2 charge RNs with light or no patient load
  • Support Staff: 4 patient care techs (sitters)
  • Telemetry: Phillips monitors; must be able to read strips
  • Ventilator Management: Respiratory Therapists (RT)
  • RT Coverage: 24/7
  • Pharmacy Coverage: Pharmacist in ER 10 hours/day
  • Hospitalists/Intensivists: Minimum 2 MDs in-house, up to 8; midlevels and anesthesia also present

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years CORE experience in ER specialty
    • Level 1 Trauma experience required (minimum 1 year preferred; will screen candidates with 8+ months)
    • Previous travel experience in ED or Neuro ICU required (no first-time travelers)
    • Must have worked as permanent staff and traveler with Level 1 trauma experience
  • Certifications:
    • Required: BLS, ACLS, PALS (ENPC not accepted as PALS replacement)
    • Preferred: TNCC, ATCN
  • EMR: Cerner experience required (must be recent and noted on resume)
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam:
    • Required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance
    • Maximum 2 attempts allowed; failure results in 6-month disqualification in AZ and Sacramento regions
  • Orientation:
    • Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
    • Floor-specific orientation: 2-3 shifts on the floor
    • Day 1 pass/fail exam (study guide provided)
    • SIMs Lab required for Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes (pass/fail)
      • Exceptions: Neuro ICU and ED have modified SIMs requirements
    • Additional training on lifts, restraints, wound care (educational)
  • Appearance & Conduct:
    • No facial piercings
    • Natural hair color only (no unnatural colors)
    • Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Vehicle: Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • Other:
    • Cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously within this system
    • Must have been off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
    • 50-mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions

Work Environment & Culture

  • Teaching hospital with nursing students present
  • Float between multiple campuses and freestanding ERs within the system
  • Emphasis on sterile technique and competency in nursing skills during SIMs lab
  • Patient acuity includes trauma and critical care cases
  • 12-hour night shifts with 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period, including 2 out of 4 major holidays

This position is ideal for experienced ER nurses with strong trauma background, Cerner EMR proficiency, and previous travel nursing experience who are comfortable working in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment with strict orientation and certification requirements.
