Full-Time | Night Shift (7pm–7am)
Job Summary
The Coordinator, Patient Flow – Emergency Department is a Registered Nurse responsible for leading and coordinating shift operations within the Emergency Department. This role oversees patient throughput, staff coordination, resource utilization, and overall flow of patients across all ED areas—including adult, pediatric, fast track, triage, and behavioral health.
The RN in this role supports patient safety, quality care, and efficient operations while collaborating with providers, nursing leadership, ancillary teams, and interdepartmental partners. The position ensures regulatory compliance, supports team engagement, and promotes a positive patient and staff experience.
Core Responsibilities
Patient Flow & Throughput Management
- Round continuously through triage, waiting areas, and treatment rooms to monitor and optimize patient flow.
- Liaise with bed management, providers, nursing teams, case management, EMS, and ancillary departments to support timely patient placement.
- Maintain constant oversight of the ED tracking board and flow metrics.
- Coordinate patient movement into and out of the Emergency Department efficiently.
Leadership & Operational Coordination
- Organize and guide ED work environment and care teams to achieve patient throughput goals.
- Provide leadership through prioritization, decision-making, and cross-disciplinary communication.
- Participate in huddles, debriefings, and team updates related to flow performance.
- Support staff performance, engagement, and adherence to evidence-based practice.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Evaluate quality of clinical processes related to patient arrivals, care, and placement.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and department policies.
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives and committees.
- Implement data-driven decisions to enhance patient experience and safety.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with providers and interprofessional teams to improve efficiency.
- Serve as liaison for patients and families to support communication and care coordination.
- Provide objective feedback to ED leadership regarding staff performance as it relates to patient flow.
Other Responsibilities
- Participate in emergency preparedness and department response.
- Support organizational mission, values, and service excellence standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing — Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing — Preferred
Licensure & Certifications
- Active RN License (Single State or Compact)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) — Required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) — Required
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) — Required
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department nursing experience (or related healthcare experience at Director’s discretion)
