Description

Position Summary

The Med/Surg–Telemetry Registered Nurse provides direct patient care on a medical-surgical telemetry unit, caring for adult patients with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions. This role requires strong clinical assessment skills, the ability to interpret telemetry, and the flexibility to float to other Med/Surg units, ICU units, and ED waiting areas as needed. RNs must be team-oriented, clinically competent, and comfortable managing a patient ratio of 1:4 or 1:5 in a fast-paced acute-care environment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Assessment

  • Provide safe, high-quality nursing care to medical-surgical and telemetry patients.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, develop and implement individualized nursing care plans, and evaluate patient outcomes.
  • Monitor and interpret cardiac telemetry, promptly identifying changes in patient condition.
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with hospital policy and providers’ orders.

Patient Monitoring & Communication

  • Communicate patient status to physicians and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Educate patients and families on illness, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
  • Document all care accurately and timely within the EMR (EPIC).

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Collaborate with physicians, case management, respiratory therapy, and other disciplines.
  • Participate in bedside handoff and interdisciplinary rounds.
  • Demonstrate adaptability when floating to other Med/Surg units, ICU units, or ED waiting rooms.

Safety, Quality, & Compliance

  • Adhere to all safety, infection prevention, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Engage in quality initiatives and evidence-based practice.
  • Utilize hospital equipment including EPIC EMR and Pyxis medication dispensing systems.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Active Michigan RN license in good standing.
  • 1–2 years of recent Med/Surg experience preferred (1 year minimum strongly preferred).
  • BLS certification (American Heart Association).
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification – or willingness to complete prior to start.
  • Ability to work every other weekend.
  • Ability to float to various units as hospital needs require.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and critical thinking abilities.

Preferred:

  • Prior telemetry experience.
  • Experience with EPIC EMR and Pyxis medication dispensing systems.
  • Previous acute care RN experience in critical care, ED, or progressive care settings.
