Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) in Behavioral Health for a long-term contract assignment on our Geriatric Psychiatry Unit in Wichita, Kansas. The RN will be responsible for providing comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care to older adult patients experiencing acute psychiatric conditions, ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment. This is a critical role focused on patient assessment, medication management, therapeutic intervention, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.

Unit Description
The Geriatric Psychiatry Nursing Unit is a specialized inpatient unit dedicated to the care of elderly patients with acute mental health needs. The unit uses a multidisciplinary approach to stabilize and treat complex psychological and physical health issues common in this population.

- EHR: Cerner
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments, develop individualized care plans, and continually evaluate patient responses to interventions.
- Administer and monitor psychotropic and other prescribed medications, paying close attention to potential side effects and interactions specific to the geriatric population.
- Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation for agitated or volatile patients, utilizing therapeutic communication and approved techniques (e.g., CPI/MOAB protocols).
- Ensure the physical and psychological safety of all patients in the unit environment, adhering to all security protocols.
- Collaborate effectively with psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care.
- Educate patients and families on diagnosis, treatment plans, coping skills, and discharge planning.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the Cerner Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
Qualifications
Required Experience & Skills
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Registered Nurse (RN), preferably in a Behavioral Health, Psychiatry, or Geriatric setting.
- Skills: Demonstrated competency in crisis management, therapeutic communication, medication administration, and patient de-escalation.
Required Credentials & Certifications
The following certifications must be current and verifiable:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- CPI/MOAB High Risk Online Portion (Before start)
- CPI/MOAB High Risk On-Site Portion
