Unit Profile – Med Surg / Telemetry (2 West)

Trauma Level: II
Start Dates: Only 1/12 (orientation 1/5) — not flexible
Radius Rule: 100-mile radius
Charting System: Epic — Recent Epic proficiency required
RTO Policy: Max 5 days
Scheduling:

• No blocked scheduling
• No 48-hour guarantees
• Limited holidays (see below)

Required Recent Experience:

• Must have recent Trauma Level I or II hospital experience

Unit Details

• Department: Med Surg | Telemetry – 2 West
• Beds: 90 beds, all double occupancy
• Nurse: Patient Ratios:
  • Days: 1:5–6
  • Nights: 1:6

Certifications

• Required: BLS
• Preferred: ACLS

Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

• Primarily medical patients
• Pneumonia
• COPD
• Radiation therapy patients
• AKI
• Occasional lap chole
• Occasional appendectomy
• Stable trach patients
• General med-surg acuity

Drips

• Non-titrated drips only:
  • Heparin
  • Lasix gtt (fixed rate)

Experience Requirements

• 2 years RN experience total
• 1 year specialty experience (Med Surg/Tele)

Tele / Monitoring

• Telemetry on unit
• Dedicated monitor tech
• Travelers do NOT read their own strips

Support Staff & Leadership

• Charge Nurse each shift: Sometimes free; may take an assignment
• PCAs: Ratio approx. 8–12 patients per PCA
• RT equipment supported: BiPAP, stable trach care

Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift Times: 0645–1915 / 1845–0715
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Typically 2 out of 3 holiday commitments
• Low Census On-Call: Possible

Floating Expectations

Travelers may float to:

• General Med Surg
• Stable, low-acuity ICU patients
• RDU
• Foothills Clinic RDU
