Description
Job Description: Certified Surgical Technologist – Labor & Delivery (L&D)
A Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) in the Labor & Delivery (L&D) unit plays a vital role in supporting obstetric surgeons, nurses, and the entire perinatal team during childbirth-related surgical procedures. The CST ensures a safe, sterile, and efficient environment for both scheduled and emergency cases, including cesarean sections and high-risk deliveries.
Key Responsibilities
Surgical Support
- Assist obstetricians and surgeons during cesarean sections and other obstetric surgical procedures.
- Prepare and maintain the sterile field before, during, and after procedures.
- Handle surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies according to established aseptic techniques.
- Anticipate surgeon needs and provide instruments in a timely and efficient manner.
Patient Care & Delivery Support
- Support L&D nurses during laboring patient care when needed.
- Assist in preparing patients for surgical procedures, including positioning and draping.
- Help with urgent/emergent obstetric situations (e.g., STAT C-section setups).
Equipment & Inventory
- Check, assemble, and maintain surgical trays and specialized L&D equipment.
- Ensure all instruments are functioning properly before use.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of sterile supplies, ensuring readiness for all procedures.
- Participate in restocking, cleaning, and maintaining the operating and delivery rooms.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow infection control, universal precautions, and hospital safety protocols at all times.
- Accurately perform instrument, sponge, and sharps counts with the RN per policy.
- Document appropriately and report any equipment or safety concerns.
Collaboration
- Work closely with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, L&D RNs, and newborn care teams.
- Support a patient-centered, family-focused care environment.
- Be ready for on-call shifts and rapid response to emergent cases.
Qualifications
- Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential required.
- Previous L&D or women’s health surgical experience preferred (C-section experience highly desirable).
- Knowledge of sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, and OB/GYN procedures.
- Strong communication, critical thinking, and ability to work in fast-paced environments.
- Current BLS certification (per facility requirement).
