Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatric Acute Unit

Department: Pediatric Acute

Job & Shift Details

Shift: 12-hour NIGHT shifts (19:00–07:30)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
Shift Length: 12 hours
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Fri/Sat for nights)
Holiday Requirement: Required unless approved during interview

Unit Overview

Unit Type: Pediatric Acute (shared with Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)
Total Beds:
- Pediatric Acute: 22 beds
- Peds Hem/Onc: 10 beds
- Units may swing beds depending on census
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
PCT Ratio: 1:8–10

Patient Population

Medical and surgical pediatric patients including:

Hyperbilirubinemia
Neurological conditions
Diabetes
Failure to thrive
Cystic fibrosis
COVID
Orthopedic cases

Monitoring & Equipment

Monitored pediatric patients supported by a dedicated pediatric monitor tech
Telemetry monitored from the Pediatric ICU
RT Equipment: Heated High-Flow and BiPAP (RN troubleshooting only; parameters in place)

Floating Requirements

May float within the Children’s Hospital to other pediatric units
May float to Mom/Baby for baby-only assignments
No ICU or chemotherapy patients unless previously experienced

Orientation

Unit-Specific Orientation: 2 shifts (may be extended with approval)

Certifications & Requirements

Experience Required: Minimum 2 years RN experience
Certifications:
- BLS (AHA)
- PALS (AHA)
License: Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application has been initiated

Submission Requirements

Clinician’s middle initial
Requested time off
License status (active or pending)
Agreement to OSF Drug-Free Campus policy and negative drug screen

Additional Notes

Call-Off Policy: Up to 12 hours every 13 weeks without penalty

Dress Code

Any pediatric-appropriate scrub top (non-revealing)
Solid-color scrub pants
Optional solid long-sleeve undershirt or scrub jacket
