Description

Stepdown Cardiac/Neuro – Days – Deaconess Midtown

Local Rule: No local candidates (must be outside a 40-mile radius)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Start Date: DEC or JAN (bi-weekly orientation)
Guaranteed Hours: 36
Primary Location: Deaconess Midtown
Shift: 12-hour days, 6:30–7:00

Float Requirements:

  • First to float within skillset
  • May float to Deaconess Newburgh, IN (8 miles) or Deaconess Henderson, KY (11 miles)
  • 2-hour notice for cross-campus float
  • Mid-shift float within the same campus possible; cross-campus mid-shift float unlikely but possible

On-Call: None
Weekend/Holiday Requirements: Three weekends per six-week schedule; every other holiday

Required Certifications (must be attached at submittal):

  • Active compact RN license
  • AHA BLS
  • AHA ACLS
  • NIHSS

Minimum Experience:

  • 2 years of solid Stepdown + 1 travel contract
    OR
  • 5 years solid Stepdown experience (if no travel background)

Charting:

  • Recent EPIC experience required (checkoff class required)

Patient Population:

  • Post-cardiac procedures (cath/stents/interventions, pacers, ICDs, ablations)
  • STEMI/NSTEMI care
  • Carotid endarterectomy
  • Sepsis
  • Neuro (CVAs, seizures, possible TBI)
  • DKA

Required Skills:

  • Telemetry and 12-lead EKG interpretation (travelers must pass tele tests)
  • Post heart-cath care (femoral/TR bands)
  • Drip initiation/titration (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Cardene, Nitro, Insulin, Heparin)
  • NIHSS and strong neuro assessments
  • Sepsis management
  • Chest tubes
  • PIV insertion
  • Strong assessment and critical-thinking skills

Unit Details:

  • 19 beds total (8 Stepdown, 11 MS/Tele)
  • Ratios Days: 1:5–6; Charge Nurses will take patients
  • Stepdown RNs may take MS/Tele patients
  • Strong leadership: Unit manager has 20+ years with Deaconess and lowest turnover in 2024

Scrubs: Navy blue (no competing health system or agency logos)

Additional Notes:

  • Three call-ins may result in termination
  • Teaching hospital—may precept students and new hires
