Description
Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical Surgical
Unit: General Medical & Surgical Units
Charting System: EPIC
Scrub Color: Caribbean Blue
Position Overview
We are seeking experienced Medical-Surgical Registered Nurses to join our General Medical and Surgical units. Our units care for a diverse adult patient population with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions, requiring strong clinical judgment, adaptability, and teamwork.
Patient Population
Nurses care for patients with conditions including, but not limited to:
- Chronic illnesses: COPD, Diabetes, CHF, End-Stage Renal Disease
- Gastrointestinal disorders: Pancreatitis, GI bleeding, gastroparesis, inflammatory bowel disease
- Infectious diseases: Pneumonia, cellulitis, sepsis, UTI, C. diff
- Neurological conditions: Stroke, dementia, traumatic brain injuries
- Mental health conditions: Depression, anxiety, substance abuse
Patients may undergo procedures such as colonoscopies, thoracentesis, paracentesis, bronchoscopy, and minor surgeries (lap chole, incision & drainage, biopsies, amputations).
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive medical-surgical nursing care
- Perform patient assessments and individualized care planning
- Utilize inter-professional communication to coordinate care
- Manage IV therapy, heparin and insulin drips
- Care for patients with chest tubes, feeding tubes, wound vacs
- Operate IV pumps, feeding pumps, heat/cooling devices
- Accurate and timely documentation in the EHR
Equipment & Technology
- EPIC Electronic Health Record
- Pyxis medication dispensing systems
- Accu-Chek blood glucose monitors
- Hospira IV pumps
- Sequential Compression Devices (SCDs)
- Telemetry monitoring
- Heating and cooling pads
Requirements
- Experience:
- Minimum 1.5 years of Level 1, Level 2, or tertiary care experience
- At least 1 year at a similarly sized facility (600+ beds)
- Licensure:
- Active Indiana RN license or compact RN license
- Certifications:
- BLS (required)
Schedule & Staffing
- 12-hour shifts
- 3 weekend shifts every 4 weeks
- Patient ratios: 1:5–6
- Med-Surg RNs will float to other medical units only, based on unit needs
Orientation & Training
All supplemental staff complete the Jump Start Orientation Program, which includes:
- 1 day of general hospital orientation
- Approximately 5 days of nursing unit orientation
- EPIC training classes included
