Description
Unit: PACU Location: AO Fox Unit Type: Combined Phase I and Phase II recovery Number of Beds: 8 Typical Surgeries: General, Orthopedics, Plastics, Urology, GYN Patient Population: Primarily adults; pediatric patients seen monthly for ENT surgery blocks Hours of Operation: 0600–1800 RN-to-Patient Ratios (per ASPAN/AORN guidelines): Phase I: o 1:1 for unstable patients or children under 8 without support at bedside o 1:2 for stable patients Phase II: o 1:1 for unstable patients or children under 8 without support o 1:2 for children under 8 with support o 1:3 for stable patients Certifications Required: ACLS and PALS Support Provided on the Unit: Techs, aides, and respiratory therapists available Float Expectations: Nurses are expected to float between ASU (Ambulatory Surgery Unit) and PACU Ventilator/Intubation Management: Not required—PACU nurses do not manage ventilated or intubated patients Sedation Recovery: Yes – nurses recover patients receiving moderate sedation or monitored anesthesia care (MAC) Monitoring & Scoring Tools Used: Phillips Monitoring System Aldrete Post-Anesthesia Scoring Braden Scale Call Requirements: Yes – approximately once per week (response time per facility guidelines) Average Length of Stay in PACU: Approximately 1 hour
