Description
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Emergency Room Psychiatric Registered Nurse (ER Psych RN) for a night shift opportunity in Kansas City, KS. This is a highly autonomous role within the Emergency Department, requiring strong psychiatric assessment skills, crisis management expertise, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced ED setting.
Start Date: ASAP
Schedule: 12-hour Nights (1900–0700)
Shifts: 3x per week
Setting: Emergency Department – Psychiatric Services
This position plays a critical role in assessing, stabilizing, and coordinating care for high-risk psychiatric patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
Responsibilities
Direct Patient Care
- Provide primary nursing care to two high-risk psychiatric patients within the ED
- Administer medications and manage restraints in accordance with policy
- Utilize therapeutic communication and de-escalation techniques
- Coordinate placement for inpatient psychiatric or state hospital admission
Psychiatric Evaluation
- Assess all psychiatric patients entering the ED following medical clearance
- Determine appropriate disposition (inpatient admission, discharge, involuntary hold)
- Develop safety plans and coordinate necessary placement and transport
- Serve as a key clinical resource for ED physicians regarding psychiatric recommendations
Crisis Response
- Respond to Behavioral Response Team (BRT) calls throughout the hospital
- Manage escalated or violent patients using de-escalation and limit-setting strategies
- Support bedside staff alongside nurse managers and hospital security/police
- Ensure patient and staff safety in high-acuity situations
Requirements
- Active Kansas RN license or Compact RN license
- BLS certification
- Minimum 1 year of Emergency Room experience
- Minimum 1 year of psychiatric nursing experience (hospital setting preferred)
- Strong experience conducting psychiatric assessments and determining patient disposition
- Experience working with violent or high-risk behavioral health patients
- Must be comfortable working independently in a high-acuity ED environment
New graduates will not be considered.

- Floating: Based on census and acuity
- Weekend Requirement: Not required but may be asked to work 1–2 weekends per month
- On-Call: None
- Holidays: Required based on unit needs
