Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse

Location: Monroe, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse to provide comprehensive care in a busy unit with approximately 200-300 births per month. The unit follows AWHONN staffing guidelines and includes a special care nursery for stabilization and transfer of neonates.

Unit Details & Responsibilities

  • 17 rooms, 17 beds
  • Medication system: Pyxis
  • Electronic Medical Record: Epic required
  • Provider support includes interpretation services, pharmacy, phlebotomy, physical therapy, radiology, rapid response team, respiratory services, social services, transportation, and unit secretary (no HUC at night)
  • Provider coverage includes CRNA, hospitalist (family practice/medical), anesthesiologist, CNM, MD, and fellows

Clinical Duties

  • Labor and Delivery:
    • Assist with vaginal deliveries, operative vaginal births, C-sections (scrub and circulate)
    • Manage hemorrhage/shock, recover C-section patients
    • Perform sterile vaginal exams, fetal monitoring (EFM, FSE, IUPC)
    • Manage VBAC and trial of labor
    • Amnioinfusion and assist with high-risk deliveries
  • Antepartum Care:
    • NST, reflex checks, edema assessment, clonus
    • Triage of obstetrical patients
  • Neonatal Care:
    • Stabilize neonates, neonatal resuscitation, APGAR scoring, radiant warmers
    • Newborn care including circumcision assistance, cord care, metabolic screening, NAS care, phototherapy, discharge teaching
  • Postpartum Care:
    • Breastfeeding/lactation support, episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter insertion, fundus/lochia/perineum care, wound assessment
    • Care for vaginal and cesarean deliveries, postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension
  • Care of Patients with:
    • Diabetes mellitus, HELLP syndrome, malpresentations, multiple gestation, placenta previa/abruptio, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, substance abuse, uterine rupture
  • Cardiac Monitoring and Emergency Care:
    • Adult and infant cardiac arrest management, telemetry interpretation, use of rapid response team
  • Medication Administration:
    • Antihypertensives, magnesium sulfate therapy, Pitocin, prostaglandins, terbutaline
  • Pain Management:
    • Epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, opioids, pain assessment and management
  • Surgical Procedures:
    • Cervical cerclage, D&C, tubal ligation

Staffing & Schedule

  • Every other weekend schedule
  • 1:1 staffing for laboring patients, 1:3 couplet and mother/baby care
  • Special care nursery with stabilization and transfer protocols

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Michigan
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience in LDRP (Labor Delivery Recovery & Postpartum)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NRP certification
  • Experience working with Neonate, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric, and Maternal-Fetal patients
  • Experience in Non-Stress Testing (NST), reflex checks, edema assessment, and clonus
  • Experience performing sterile vaginal exams

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Proficient in Epic EMR system
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (RN only), updated annually
  • Competency exams as required by profession
  • Skills checklist required for all candidates

Work Settings Required

  • Antepartum
  • Community level experience
  • Facility births/month: 200-300 and >300
  • Level I Nursery
  • LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum)
  • Mother/Baby care

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within last 12 months
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months (annual updates required)
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (series, positive titer, or declination)
    • Tdap within 10 years (declination accepted except for certain facilities)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (required during flu season)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • N95 fit test within 12 months, updated annually (onsite exceptions possible)
  • Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, fingerprinting as applicable
  • Education verification and licensure primary source verification required
  • Two professional references within 2 years, including at least one from a leader (Charge RN or above)

  • 7 days of required time off excluding holidays
