Description

Job Overview

  • Unit/Department: ICU Nursing Float
  • Float Pool Units: ICU (see ICU requirements), ED Boarders (in-patients only), all MedSurg units, Observation unit.
  •  

Patient Care & Staffing

  • Patient Ratios:
    • ICU: 1:1 or 1:2
    • PCU/ED: 1:3–4
    • Lower acuity MedSurg: 1:5–6
  • Common Diagnoses: Any, depending on unit assignment.
  • Required Experience/Skills:
    • Minimum 2 years ICU experience.
    • Ability to manage Swans, IABP, and Impella.
    • Ability to float to MedSurg and take a full assignment.
    • Must advocate for own skill set if asked to perform tasks outside comfort level.

Certifications & Licensure

  • Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
  • License: WA RN license or Compact License

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Drip Titration: Yes, in ED, Critical Care, and PCU units.
  • Common Drips: Sedation, vasoactive medications, paralytics.
  • Tele/Monitor: Monitor techs present, RNs read tele strips.
  • Respiratory Equipment: Ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP available.
  • Charge Nurse/House Supervisor: Present on each unit.
  • Nurse Aids: Dependent on unit and staffing; most units have aids.

Scheduling

  • Shifts & Scheduling: Potential for overtime; schedule set but flexible depending on unit needs.
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (every weekend may be considered).
  • Holiday Requirement: Yes.
  • Call/Standby: No.
  • Unit Assignment Process: Staffing office calls 30–60 minutes prior to shift start; no assignments outside facility.

Dress Code

  • Scrub Color: Any professional color
  • Business Casual: For trainings

Orientation

  • Orientation Structure:
    • 1 onboarding day with manager
    • 2 shifts with a member of the float pool
