Must complete the attached TJJD New Hire Forms and be cleared to start. Please be sure to send a clear copy of their DL and SS card when sending back these completed forms.
Once cleared and fully compliant the agency nurse will have to report to a TJJD location and take a drug screen and have their fingerprints done. This usually takes 3-5 working days for the results to be returned and the nurse cannot start until both are returned clear. Nurse must keep a receipt given to them when fingerprints are done as that is needed by the unit on their first shift.
Orientation is held in Conroe, Gatesville, or Beaumont but they will work at whichever facility they accepted the offer.
Length: 13 weeks (with potential to extend)

Hours per week:
- 40 hours (IMPORTANT: Monthly schedules are subject to change and rotations are NOT guaranteed. Scheduling is NOT done at the unit level)
- Guaranteed 40 hours.
- 4 am - 2:30 pm (No set rotation or days of week month after month)
Important Process Notes:
- Complete attached TJJD New Hire Forms and send with clear copies of DL and SS card to
- After clearance, nurse must complete drug screen and fingerprinting at a TJJD location (results take 3–5 business days). Fingerprint receipt must emailed to me and the nurse must take it with them for their first shift.
- Must be 100% UTMB compliant before starting, including TB test (Attachment 2)
- IV Certification required within 30 days of start
- Complete CLP modules before start (TJJD has a specific list so be sure that one is selected when assigning modules)
- Nurse must be prepared to work with youth offenders and follow strict policies; pediatric experience is a plus but not required
OT: Eligibility to work OT Is available contingent on performance
- Float Requirements: Will be asked to float as needed. They will float to different units that are within 10 - 30 minutes of each other. They would be compensated through the facility for a drive time of up to 30 minutes with a punch correction.
Scheduling:
- Nurses could be floated or diverted within 50 miles of the unit they are assigned to work with
- Rarely could be transferred mid-shift but could be
- Miles to/from home is not considered
- Refusal to float or divert they are DNR
- Google Maps is their friend! Satellite view
- Their home base (where they live) is not considered
- 4 weeks block booking by the 20th
- Work week is Saturday – Friday, this is how OT is calculated
- Cannot have 5 or more consecutive shifts (this will not be approved.)
- Cap at 60 hours total or 20 hours OT.
Certs: BLS, IV Therapy Cert
License: Compact or Texas LVN
Experience:
- LVN must have IV Therapy
- 2 years of LVN experience required
COVID Vaccine Requirement: Required but exemptions are accepted
- Job Description:
- Youth offenders are in cells at this facility
- All lock down units
- Main responsibility will be passing meds cell side. Security Officer will be with them at all times.
- They will be taken by vehicle to the other buildings where the offenders are and either an officer or administrative staff will drive them
- 140 med passes currently in the AM
- 115 med passes in the afternoon (this could change as they see the providers)
- Outside of med pass they will be in the clinic assisting
- For pill pass they will go to a main area to pack the pills
- IMPORTANT: in the event that someone packs them for you, please notify us immediately or your charge nurse as she would be the ones documenting
- Any patients that are high acuity will be transferred out
- A few days of orientation, work with an educator to train on their EMR SMART (UTMB specific), clinical skill reviews, go over high level of the common SOPs
- They understand it will take them a little bit to get acclimated on site and will be patient with her
- Nurse manager’s moto: show one, do one, teach one
- Will have a lot of support on the unit, they do not utilize agency hardly ever so everyone there is very familiar with everything
- Empower her to ask questions if there is anything she does not understand or situations, she runs into
- No outpatient at this facility
- Documentation is SUPER important especially on the juvenile side as they can refuse their meds and must have proper documentation and signatures.
- Nurse must be thick-skinned and adaptable to a correctional juvenile environment
