What is a Correctional LPN/LVN?
A correctional LPN/LVN is a licensed practical nurse or licensed vocational nurse who specializes in providing healthcare services to incarcerated patients in correctional facilities, under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician. Correctional LPNs treat inmate patients with the same level of care as they would at any hospital or clinic but with stricter protocols and heightened safety measures in place. Despite complex challenges and various limitations on the nurse-patient relationship, correctional LPNs often find it rewarding to support the needs of an underserved population.
What does a correctional LPN/LVN do?
Lead nurses at correctional facilities are usually either RNs or APRNs, but many facilities hire LPNs to carry out RN/APRN instructions. Unlike LPNs in traditional healthcare settings, correctional LPNs typically deal with a diverse range of medical problems. Their daily tasks may include both routine and emergency medical care and the treatment of injuries and acute or chronic illnesses. Since correctional LPNs must provide all types of nursing care, their daily tasks can greatly vary. Some common tasks include:
Collecting medical histories of incoming inmates/detainees
Conducting initial assessments and taking vital signs
Developing nursing care plans under an RN’s directions
Screening patients to determine whether they need medical care
Referring inmate patients to appropriate physicians
Recording relevant information in medical records
Assisting doctors during medical exams
Providing treatment as prescribed by a doctor or RN/APRN
Administering emergency first aid
Dressing wounds and changing wound dressings
Providing routine healthcare to inmates with chronic conditions
Assisting with the administration and documentation of medications
Destroying and properly disposing of all needles/syringes
Obtaining specimens for diagnostic testing
Documenting all contacts with detainee/inmate patients
Reporting any negative reactions to medications and treatments
Offering health and wellness advice to inmate patients
Reporting any changes in the physical or emotional condition of inmate patients
Educating inmate patients on their diagnoses and medical care plans
Maintaining protocols and safety procedures as dictated by state/federal governments
Where does a correctional LPN/LVN work?
Correctional nurses may find employment at any type of facility that houses inmates and has on-site medical staff. These facilities may include state and federal penitentiaries, private prisons, and city or county jails. They may also work in adult detention centers, halfway houses, juvenile detention centers, and secure group homes or “boot camps” for youthful offenders.
What skills make a good correctional LPN/LVN?
Good correctional LPNs excel at a wide range of nursing tasks and have an extensive skill set that allows them to tackle all types of medical issues they may encounter on any given day. They possess excellent critical thinking and decision-making skills that allow them to respond quickly to emergency situations. Correctional nurses are assertive yet empathetic as they objectively provide care to a unique patient population. They effectively collaborate with primary care providers and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely, continuous, and appropriate care to inmate patients. Organization, prioritization, and problem-solving skills also are valuable traits in good correctional LPNs.
How to become a Travel Correctional LPN/LVN
LPNs and LVNs must complete an approved nursing education program, which typically takes about one year to complete. All states require licensure, so graduates must pass the NCLEX-PN licensing exam and fulfill any other state-mandated licensing requirements. LPNs may apply for a single license in the state of practice or a multistate license if their home state is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact.
After becoming licensed, LPNs should gain experience in a traditional nursing setting first. Many correctional LPN positions require a minimum of one year of clinical experience, so this step may not be optional. Gaining experience in an emergency care setting is helpful, but not necessarily required.
LPNs typically need current Basic Life Support certification and they always undergo a rigorous background investigation to obtain clearance to work with inmates. They’ll likely go through additional training once they’re hired as a correctional nurse, which often primarily covers safety and security. Although not required, it can be helpful to become a Certified Correctional Health Professional, which is offered by the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare.
What certifications are commonly held by correctional LPN/LVNs?
Correctional LPN/LVNs may hold Basic Life Support (BLS), among others.
