Med Surg RN – Job Summary & Weekly Hours Breakdown

Unit Overview:
General Medical–Surgical units care for a diverse patient population with conditions such as COPD, Diabetes, CHF, end-stage renal disease, GI disorders (pancreatitis, GI bleeding, gastroparesis, IBD), infections (pneumonia, cellulitis, sepsis, UTI, C-diff), neurological conditions (stroke, dementia, TBI), and mental health disorders (depression, anxiety, substance abuse).

Patients may also undergo procedures including colonoscopies, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, paracentesis, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, incision & drainage, biopsies, and amputations.

Weekly Schedule

  • Shift: 12-hour shifts
  • Hours per week: 36 hours (3 shifts/week)
  • Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts every 4 weeks
  • Patient ratio: 1:5–6

Core RN Responsibilities

  • Comprehensive patient assessments and care planning
  • Interdisciplinary communication with care teams
  • Medication and IV therapy management
  • Monitoring heparin & insulin drips
  • Managing feeding tubes, chest tubes, wound vacs
  • Use of EHR charting and medical equipment

Equipment & Systems Used

  • EPIC Electronic Medical Record
  • Pyxis medication dispensing
  • Hospira IV pumps
  • Accu-Check glucose monitoring
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • SCD devices for VTE prevention
  • Heating/Cooling therapy pads

Required Experience

  • Minimum 1.5 years experience in Level I, Level II, or tertiary care facility
  • At least 1 year Med Surg experience in a large hospital (600+ beds)

Licensure & Certifications

  • BLS (AHA) required
  • Indiana RN License or Compact License required

Floating

  • RN may float to other medical units based on hospital needs

Orientation & Training

  • Jump Start Program
    • 1 day: General hospital orientation
    • ~5 days: Nursing orientation
    • Epic training included
  • 8 hours orientation is non-billable

Dress Code

  • Caribbean Blue Scrubs
