Position Summary

The Break RN provides critical nursing support across multiple hospital departments by offering break relief and supplemental staffing. This role functions under the direction of the Nurse House Supervisor and supports a variety of clinical areas including Emergency, Medical-Surgical/Swing Bed, and Skilled Nursing units.

The nurse will autonomously report to assigned departments based on competency and staffing needs. This position requires the ability to deliver safe, age-appropriate care to a diverse patient population ranging from newborns to geriatric patients.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement the nursing process to deliver safe and effective patient care across assigned hospital departments.
• Provide break coverage and supplemental staffing support to unit RNs.
• Deliver age-appropriate, individualized care to patients of all ages (0–120 years).
• Float between multiple departments based on competency and staffing needs.
• Maintain up-to-date proof of competency for all units supported.
• Collaborate with supervisors and clinical teams to ensure continuity of care.
• Document care accurately using the Cerner EMR system.

Required Experience

• Minimum 1 year of acute care experience within the last 2 years.
• At least 6 months of recent Emergency or Critical Care experience required.

Licensure & Certifications

• Current, unencumbered California RN License.
• AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers (must be from American Heart Association).
• ACLS
• PALS

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

Additional Notes

• Missed meals or breaks must be pre-approved by a supervisor to be eligible for pay.
• Overtime and holiday pay follow strictly defined policies based on hours worked.
• Credentialing should be submitted in one complete batch.
• Housing in the area may be limited; short-term and longer-term options are available nearby.
• Weekly billing cycles apply; invoices follow the facility’s standard process.
