Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical/Surgical Float

Location: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Employment Type: Traveler - Backfill
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

• Provide nursing care on general medical and surgical units caring for a diverse patient population with diagnoses including:

  • Chronic illnesses: COPD, Diabetes, CHF, end-stage renal disease
  • Gastrointestinal issues: pancreatitis, bleeding, gastroparesis, inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Infections: pneumonia, cellulitis, sepsis, UTI, C. difficile
  • Neurological conditions: stroke, dementia, traumatic brain injuries
  • Mental health disorders: depression, anxiety, substance abuse
• Care for patients undergoing procedures such as colonoscopies, thoracentesis, paracentesis, bronchoscopy, and minor surgeries (lap chole, incision and drainage, biopsies, amputation)
• Perform assessments, care planning, inter-professional communication, and utilize electronic health records (Epic)
• Manage equipment including IV pumps, wound vacs, feeding pumps and tubes, chest tubes, heparin and insulin drips, and telemetry monitoring
• Float to other medical units as needed
• Patient ratios typically 1:5-6

Schedule

• 12-hour shifts
• 3 weekend shifts every 4 weeks

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Indiana
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Minimum 1.5 years of experience at Level 1, Level 2, or tertiary care facility
• At least 1 year of medical-surgical nursing experience within the last year
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)

Orientation & Training

• Jump Start orientation program including:

  • 1 day general hospital orientation
  • Approximately 5 days nursing orientation
  • Epic electronic health record training

Additional Information

• Dress code: Caribbean Blue scrubs
• Floating limited to other medical units only
• Use of Epic electronic charting system and various clinical equipment required

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg RNs comfortable with floating and managing a wide variety of patient conditions in a fast-paced hospital environment.
