Registered Nurse (RN) – Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Facility: Norton Audubon Hospital (Norton Healthcare)
Location: 1 Audubon Plaza Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40217
Assignment Duration: 13 weeks (with potential extension)
Schedule: 36 hours/week | 12-hour Night Shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
 

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Registered Nurse (RN) for the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at Norton Audubon Hospital. This role focuses on delivering high-quality, patient- and family-centered care in a cardiac stepdown environment. The RN will manage post-procedural cardiac patients, utilizing clinical expertise, critical thinking, and evidence-based practice to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

This position follows the Kristin M. Swanson Model of Care, emphasizing compassionate, individualized care, patient education, and clinical excellence.

Unit Overview

  • 14-bed cardiac stepdown unit (PCU)
  • Patient ratio: 1:3 – 1:4
  • Focus on post-procedural cardiac patients
  • Common diagnoses:
    • NSTEMI
    • TAVR
    • Watchman procedures
    • Cardiac ablations
  • Equipment & skills:
    • Telemetry monitoring (required)
    • Femstop devices
    • EKG interpretation
  • Medications:
    • Nitroglycerin (NTG)
    • Heparin
    • Angiomax
    • Beta blockers
    • Plavix
  • EMR: Epic
  • Scrubs: Galaxy Blue

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and reassessments
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans
  • Monitor cardiac rhythms and titrate medications as needed
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding care and recovery
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure quality outcomes
  • Delegate tasks appropriately and support unit teamwork
  • Participate in quality, safety, and process improvement initiatives
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license – Kentucky (required at submission)
  • Minimum 2 years of acute care RN experience
  • Recent PCU / cardiac stepdown experience
  • Proficiency in telemetry interpretation and medication titration
  • Experience with Epic EMR
  • Certifications:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Preferred Experience

  • Strong background in cardiac stepdown or post-procedural cardiac care
  • Experience managing cardiac drips and interventions
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Night shift (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • 3 shifts per week (36 hours)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating may be required based on unit needs
