Description
Job Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Technologist (MT/MLT) performs routine and complex laboratory testing in a high-complexity clinical laboratory environment. This role is responsible for specimen analysis, result validation, quality control, and adherence to regulatory standards to support accurate patient diagnosis and treatment.
Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Operations:
- Perform specimen handling, processing, and analysis per established SOPs
- Conduct routine and high-complexity testing using approved methodologies
- Review, validate, and release laboratory results accurately and timely
- Maintain complete and accurate records of all testing activities
Quality & Compliance:
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety standards
- Perform and document quality control (QC), calibration, and maintenance
- Ensure proficiency testing is handled identically to patient specimens
- Participate in regulatory inspections and audits as required
Troubleshooting & Problem Solving:
- Identify and resolve testing discrepancies or instrument issues
- Escalate unresolved issues to senior technologists or supervisors
- Document all corrective actions and deviations from performance standards
Communication & Collaboration:
- Report critical (STAT) results per departmental protocols
- Communicate effectively with lab staff, clinicians, and clients
- Provide support and training on new procedures when needed
General Duties:
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organization
- Ensure proper labeling and tracking of reagents and test kits
- Participate in departmental meetings and training sessions
- Follow all safety procedures and use protective equipment appropriately
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology OR
- BS/BA in Chemistry, Biology, or related science OR
- Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
Certification:
- ASCP or AMT Certification (Required or Eligible)
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory experience (high-complexity testing preferred)
Required Skills:
- Strong knowledge of laboratory testing methodologies and workflows
- Understanding of Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) practices
- Ability to operate laboratory instruments and multiple LIS systems
- Strong analytical, organizational, and multitasking abilities
- Effective communication and customer service skills
