Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – MICU / Progressive Care Unit

Location: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Employment Type: Traveler - Backfill
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 3:00 AM – 3:00 PM (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 (Three 12-hour shifts per week)
Schedule: Traditional weekday plus weekend rotation


Unit Overview

  • Mixed acuity unit with both ICU and Progressive Care patients; majority are Progressive Care patients.
  • Medical ICU: 24 beds; Progressive Care Unit: 12 beds.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Progressive Care: 1:3 (or 1:4 with transfers/medical patients)
    • ICU: 1:2 (or 1:3 with transfers/medical patients)
  • Equipment used includes Phillips heart monitors, Epic (EMR), Pyxis, EKG machine, and dopplers.
  • Position floats to all ICU, Progressive Care, and Medsurg units, maintaining a maximum 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio.
  • Dress code: Caribbean blue scrubs; jackets must be black, white, or Caribbean blue; undershirts (short or long sleeve) must be black or white.

Job Responsibilities

  • Care for ventilated patients and manage critically ill patients with diagnoses such as sepsis, respiratory failure (acute and chronic), renal failure (acute and chronic), myocardial infarctions, pulmonary embolism, and pneumonia.
  • Initiate and titrate IV drips including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics.
  • Assist with intubations and line placements.
  • Monitor and care for both ICU and progressive patients on the unit.
  • Collaborate as part of a team; critical thinking and flexibility are essential.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 1.5 years ICU experience required; 2 years ICU experience preferred.
  • Valid Indiana RN license.
  • BLS (AHA only) certification.
  • ACLS (AHA only) certification.
  • Travel experience preferred.
  • Experience in Level 1 or Level 2 facilities preferred.

Orientation & Training

  • One day of unit-specific onboarding through workforce development.
  • Training includes policy review and Epic EMR access.

Additional Notes

  • The traveler will never work alone.
  • Floating to other units is expected, including other ICUs, Progressive Care, and Medsurg units.
  • Candidates should communicate any required time off during the assignment in advance.
