Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) for a surgical acute care unit. This role is ideal for nurses with strong experience in preoperative and postoperative care, who thrive in a fast-paced inpatient environment and are comfortable working night shifts.

Unit Overview

• Adult surgical unit with approximately 34 beds
• Focus on pre- and postoperative care for a variety of surgical patients
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 1:5–6

Schedule & Work Structure

• Night shift position
• Three 12-hour shifts per week
• No on-call requirement
• Must be available to work weekends and holidays as needed
• Flexibility required based on unit needs
• May be required to float to other units

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality nursing care to surgical patients in the acute care setting
• Provide comprehensive preoperative and postoperative care
• Monitor patient status, including vital signs and response to treatment
• Manage surgical drains, chest tubes, and post-surgical complications
• Administer medications and IV therapies, including PCA pumps
• Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes
• Educate patients and families on procedures, recovery, and discharge planning
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation using EMR systems

Common Procedures & Patient Types

• Abdominal surgeries (e.g., laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy)
• Mastectomies
• Thyroidectomies
• Patients requiring chest tubes, drains, and post-surgical monitoring

Equipment & Systems

• Vital signs monitoring equipment
• IV infusion and PCA pumps
• EMR charting systems (EPIC preferred)
• Medication dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis)
• Workstations on Wheels (WOWs)

Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (state-specific; must be obtained prior to start if not currently held)
• Minimum of 2 years of recent experience in surgical or acute care nursing
• Strong proficiency in preoperative and postoperative care
• Basic Life Support (BLS/BCLS) certification – required
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification – required
• Ability to work independently and adapt to a dynamic clinical environment
