🧪 Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) :

🔹 Position Overview

A Clinical Laboratory Scientist (also known as Medical Technologist) performs complex laboratory testing and analysis to support diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This role has greater responsibility than a technician, including interpretation of results, quality oversight, and sometimes supervision.

🔹 Key Responsibilities

1. Advanced Laboratory Testing

• Perform and interpret tests in:
  • Clinical chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Microbiology
  • Immunology/serology
  • Blood bank (transfusion services)
• Validate and release test results with high accuracy

2. Result Interpretation & Clinical Correlation

• Analyze abnormal findings and correlate with clinical data
• Notify physicians of critical values
• Assist healthcare providers in understanding lab results

3. Quality Control & Assurance

• Develop and monitor quality control procedures
• Ensure compliance with:
  • CLIA
  • CAP
  • Joint Commission standards
• Conduct proficiency testing and audits

4. Equipment & Method Management

• Operate and troubleshoot advanced lab instruments
• Perform calibration, validation, and maintenance
• Evaluate new testing methods or equipment

5. Supervision & Training

• Guide and supervise:
  • Medical Lab Technicians
  • Lab assistants
• Train new staff and ensure competency assessments

6. Specimen Management

• Ensure proper collection, labeling, and processing
• Maintain specimen integrity and chain of custody

7. Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain accurate laboratory records
• Use Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
• Ensure timely reporting of results

📜 Certification:

• MLS/CLS certification (e.g., ASCP/AMT or equivalent)
• BLS (AHA)

🧠 Experience

• Minimum 2 years in a clinical lab or hospital
• Experience in hospital or public health settings preferred
