Position Overview
Summa Health is seeking an experienced and compassionate Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (MS RN) for a long-term assignment at the Akron Campus. The RN will provide high-quality patient-centered care within a 28-bed acute care Medical/Surgical unit specializing in geriatric patients and overflow medical/surgical admissions. Candidates must demonstrate strong clinical judgment, adaptability, and proficiency in acute care nursing.

Unit Overview
The 6 West Medical/Surgical Unit is a 28-bed inpatient acute care unit primarily focused on caring for geriatric patients aged 65 and older who require close observation, medical treatment, and acute inpatient care. Overflow medical and surgical patients are also admitted to the unit.

This interdisciplinary approach emphasizes maintaining patient wellness, preventing functional decline, and delivering holistic, patient-centered care.
Common Patient Diagnoses
- Gastrointestinal Bleeding (GIB)
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
- Trauma
- Pneumonia
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Infections
- Altered Mental Status
- Failure to Thrive
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios
- Typically 1:5 to 1:6
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive nursing care to acute medical/surgical patients
- Perform patient assessments, monitoring, and documentation in Epic EMR
- Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately
- Initiate, maintain, and monitor IV therapy
- Perform phlebotomy and blood specimen collection
- Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care
- Monitor changes in patient condition and respond appropriately
- Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans and discharge instructions
- Float to similar units as needed based on staffing requirements
Required Qualifications
- Active RN license in good standing
- Minimum 2+ years of recent Medical Surgical nursing experience
- Recent Epic EMR experience within the last 12 months
- Experience with:
- Acute inpatient MS care
- IV insertion and maintenance
- Phlebotomy/blood draws
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program approved by:
- ACEN (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing), or
- CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education)
- Current BLS Certification required
