Required Certifications

RN ID/Compact license ACLS, AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring, BLS Certification, NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Shift Notes

7p-7a, weekends as needed, Can be floated throughout the hospital for sitter shifts when necessary. Travelers are typically the first to float for sitter shifts.

 

 

 

 

L&D / Postpartum Unit Notes

Unit Overview

  • L&D Beds: 11 L&D rooms that also function as triage rooms
  • C-Section OR Suites:
    • 2 C-section suites on the unit
    • 2 PACU recovery bays on the floor
  • Postpartum Beds: 17 postpartum beds
  • Triage:
    • Typically 2 designated triage rooms
    • Approximately 4–5 triage patients per day discharged home (not including admitted patients)

Delivery Volume

  • Average 5–6 deliveries per day
  • Approximately 150–180 deliveries per month

Staffing Ratios (AWHONN Guidelines)

  • Intrapartum: 1:1
  • Antepartum: 1:1–3
  • Postpartum/Mother-Baby: 1:3–4

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NRP
  • AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring
    OR
  • NCC Certification in Fetal Monitoring

Patient Population

  • High-risk OB patients
  • Facility supports babies 30+ weeks gestation
  • Babies under 30 weeks are stabilized and transferred out

Experience Requirements

Required:

  • Minimum 2 years of L&D experience
  • Some postpartum experience
  • Comfortable working in both L&D and Postpartum/Mother-Baby
  • Experience with high-risk patients
  • Must be able to circulate C-sections

Additional Preferences:

  • No candidates with only Critical Access Hospital experience
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Preferred experience in similarly sized L&D/Postpartum departments
  • Epic experience preferred (please specify last use date)

Drips

  • RNs are required to titrate drips

Common drips:

  • Pitocin
  • Magnesium
  • Insulin
    • Insulin drip experience preferred but willing to train

Leadership & Support Staff

  • Charge nurse generally does not take assignments unless necessary
  • Resource nurse utilized when staffing allows
  • Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager available on-call as needed

Support Staff

  • CST coverage in-house 24/7
  • CNAs on Postpartum/Mother-Baby unit
    • Duties include vitals, baths, ADLs, blood glucose checks, task assistance, etc.

Provider Coverage

  • OB coverage:
    • In-house daytime Monday–Friday
    • On-call overnight
  • Neonatology:
    • Neonatologist onsite during the day
    • Neo APP coverage overnight
  • CRNA in-house 24/7 for OB

Respiratory Support

  • RT available 24/7
  • RT manages respiratory equipment and treatments as needed

Telemetry / Monitoring

  • Tele techs in-house
  • RNs not required to independently interpret telemetry strips
  • RNs should recognize:
    • Rhythm changes
    • Basic rhythms
    • Life-threatening rhythms

EFM System

  • Epic CPN
  • GE Connect

Scheduling

  • 7:00–7:00 shifts
  • Schedule created every 6 weeks by ANM
  • Block scheduling considered but not guaranteed
  • Staff/travelers may not work more than 5 consecutive shifts
  • Travelers expected to remain flexible to help fill scheduling gaps

Weekend Requirements

  • Every other weekend (EOW)
    • Days: Saturday & Sunday
    • Nights: Friday & Saturday (as able; may vary based on unit needs)

Holiday Requirements

  • May participate in holiday rotation

Call / Standby

  • May be called off based on census/staffing needs

Floating Requirements

  • Primary units: L&D and Postpartum/Mother-Baby
  • May float throughout hospital for sitter assignments when needed
  • Travelers are typically first to float for sitter assignments

Dress Code
